Peptides 101

Short chains of amino acids

A peptide is, at its core, a short chain of amino acids linked together — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just on a much smaller scale. While a protein can have hundreds or thousands of amino acids, a peptide usually has only a few: typically between 2 and 50. That smaller size isn't a minor detail — it's exactly what defines how the molecule behaves inside a living system.

Messengers, not system-wide switches

Unlike compounds that broadly affect an entire biological system, peptides tend to act as highly specific messengers. Each peptide has its own three-dimensional shape that fits a particular cellular receptor, much like a key that only opens one lock. When it binds to that receptor, it triggers a targeted response — it might kick off tissue repair, stimulate the release of a hormone, or modulate a specific immune pathway, without needing to affect the whole system.

Synthesis, purity, and traceability

Every compound in the SK Biosciences catalog is produced through solid-phase peptide synthesis, a process where the amino acid chain is built residue by residue in controlled facilities. Once synthesized, each batch is purified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to reach ≥99% purity and sent to an independent lab for validation before it's published in the catalog. Reconstitution and storage

Most research peptides ship lyophilized (as a powder) and need to be reconstituted before lab use, along with being stored under specific temperature and light conditions to preserve stability. We cover both procedures in more detail in our reconstitution and storage guides.
